In its most basic form, the cycle safari is a touring holiday using pedal power. In many cases, you don’t even need your own bike. Companies that specialise in cycling breaks very often have bikes to rent, so you don’t need to go to the expense of buying a bike before you try out a cycling safari. If you decide that you enjoy the freedom and want to take up cycling on a more regular basis, having hired a bike first will give you an idea of what kind of bike you’d like to buy.

Safari tours of this kind give you absolute freedom to organise your own itinerary and travel at your own pace. You can pick a region in the UK, maybe somewhere you’ve never visited before and arrange overnight stops and accommodation before you depart. Take an enjoyable meander off the beaten track along by riverbanks and through picturesque valleys or picture perfect postcard towns and villages.

Why Take Cycling Holidays?

Quite apart from the health benefits of cycling holidays and the chance to see things you wouldn’t see from either a car window or a train carriage, one of the big benefits of taking safari holidays on a bike is the lack of fuel costs. With the price of petrol and diesel these days, travelling under your own power will save a tidy sum.

For some people this is a secondary consideration. The main benefit of touring by bike is the opportunity to get out of the city and get closer to nature. As the roads become more congested, travelling by car becomes far less enjoyable. Who wants to spend half their holiday time stuck in a traffic jam? It’s so much more exhilarating to glide along country lanes, listening to birdsong, smelling the heady aroma of wildflowers and hedgerows and enjoying the wide-open spaces of the beautiful English countryside we so often miss.

Where Can I Take a Cycle Safari?

Safaris by bike are available right across the United Kingdom from the furthest reaches of the Highlands of Scotland, over into Ireland and throughout mainland UK. If you’re not too sure whether or not you enjoy cycling, or if your fitness levels are not what you’d like them to be, you may choose to take a short break rather than a long cycling holiday to start with.

If you organise your cycling safari through a tour company, you’ll find experts who will work with you to formulate a plan, according to your own preferences. Alternatively, you could take a group cycling holiday and get together with like-minded people who enjoy the open air and freedom that cycling gives them.

You can also choose between guided and self-guided tours. With guided tours, you will have a tour guide who travels with you. This will be a person who intimately knows the area you’re travelling in and can show you the best routes and the secret hideaways known only to the locals. These are places you wouldn’t normally get to see.

On self-guided tours, you choose for yourself when to leave, when to stay and which route you’ll take. It makes the perfect holiday for people with an adventurous nature who like to get out and explore by themselves. Activity holidays by bike are the perfect way to get out and about for a holiday with a difference. There’s far more to the UK than the motorway network and it is all out there, just waiting to be discovered.

South Korea not only has busy, modern towns and cities, it also contains magnificent mountain ranges, charming fishing villages and many other unspoiled areas of countryside and coast. One of the best ways to explore the country is by bike. Not only does this allow travellers to explore the landscape and the culture, but also to see why South Korea is often called the ‘Land of the Morning Calm’.

The capital city of Seoul offers an eclectic mix of old and new and any visitors to the country should take a few days to explore it.

Jeju Island offers the chance to cycle through mountains, including Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea. There are many miles of white sandy beaches as well as the opportunity to dive. A great way to explore the island is by cycling along its coastal road.

Songnisan National Park contains spectacular mountains and wilderness as well as the Beopjusa Temple and its large gold Buddha statue. There is plenty of accommodation available in this area and the local speciality foods are worth trying.

The ancient capital of the Shilla Dynasty, Gyeongju has many relics that are thousands of years old. The ancient capitals of the Baekje Dynasty, Gongju and Buyeo, also have many fortresses, temples and tombs.

For those who are considering adventure travel by bike in South Korea, there are some tips that may help make planning the trip easier.

Within South Korea, it is free to take bikes on domestic flights (within the baggage allowance) if they are partially dismantled. Unfortunately, trains are often unable to carry bikes as they do not have the storage facilities.

Going by bus is the easiest way to travel long distances, especially with bikes. Most towns and cities have a bus station and most Koreans will be able to point travellers towards it. The regional buses (shiwe) and long-distance buses (gosok) are able to carry bikes, usually without extra charge.

For those who are planning adventure travel in South Korea, be aware that few people use maps. Because of this, any maps you find can often be out of date. The Korean Tourist Organisation publishes a map in English and this is available from KTO offices at the airports. Information on bike routes can also be sketchy, although GPS maps are available from a variety of sites. On the roads, cyclists should pay special attention to buses and taxis, as they tend to pull over without any warning to other road users.

In terms of maintenance, Korean bikes are in line with US standards, so cyclists should ensure that they carry essential spares. Fitness is also essential for climbing mountains and although the climate is similar to the north-eastern US (hot summers and cold winters), the mountain altitudes require stamina. During winter, mountains may be impassable and few roads are gritted. September and October are popular times for touring, although some prefer earlier in the summer.

There are plenty of accommodation options throughout the country, including minbak – very basic accommodation on a sleeping mat – or yeogwan, which are basic hotels, sometimes found next to public saunas.

Finally, all cyclists should be aware that many people hike in South Korea and this means that popular mountain trails can be very busy at times. However, for those who are looking to fully experience the country and visit places that are off the beaten tourist track, then cycling is a great way in which to explore all that it offers.
